Above Bingin: A Guide to Uluwatu's Clifftop Villas

Uluwatu's villas sit on clifftops above the Indian Ocean, most near the surf break at Bingin Beach, trading nearby restaurants and nightlife for dramatic, uninterrupted views. Uluwatu doesn't reveal itself the way Seminyak or Canggu do. There's no beachfront promenade, no string of cafés to wander between. What there is instead is limestone — cliffs that fall away into the Indian Ocean in sheer, dramatic drops, with surf breaking far below and almost nothing between you and the horizon. It's the part of Bali built for people who want a view worth the extra drive.

What a Clifftop Stay Actually Feels Like

The defining feature of a Uluwatu villa isn't a single amenity — it's the sense of elevation. At Uluwatu Clifftop Villa, the infinity pool sits at the cliff's edge, angled so the water seems to disappear into the ocean beyond it. Days here have a different pace: breakfast on the terrace as the light comes up over the water, an afternoon that might involve nothing more ambitious than moving from a sun lounger to the pool and back, evenings spent watching the sky change colour with absolutely nothing to interrupt the view.

A little further along the cliffs, directly above the famous surf break at Bingin Beach, The Young Villas – Dolce, Bingin takes a different approach to the same setting. Rather than one fixed layout, it offers one, two, three or four-bedroom units within the same garden and pool setting — private check-in, a 24-hour front desk and full-day security throughout, with a paid shuttle available for trips further afield. It suits a couple wanting an intimate one-bedroom stay just as well as a small group booking several units side by side.

Getting Around

Uluwatu trades convenience for scenery, and it's worth knowing that going in. The area sits apart from Bali's main tourist strip, so a private driver or scooter becomes part of daily life rather than an occasional treat — worth arranging in advance, particularly during peak months when Uluwatu's cliffside roads see heavier traffic.

Who Uluwatu Suits

This is honeymoon and proposal territory, and small-wedding territory too — anywhere a dramatic backdrop matters more than walkable nightlife. It also suits surfers drawn to Bingin and Uluwatu's breaks, and anyone, frankly, who has already done Seminyak or Canggu and wants to see what the island looks like from higher up.

If uninterrupted ocean views and genuine seclusion are non-negotiable, Uluwatu's clifftop villas are, on this island, very hard to beat.
